Deus Ex was first released in 2000 as a single cyberpunk-themed role-playing action video game. It was developed by Ion Storm, and Eidos Interactive published it. Deus Ex received massive critical acclaim which includes the Best PC Game of All Time award.

Series of Deus Ex


The Deus Ex concept art, stories, universe, and characters are of a dystopian near future which was inspired by films like Robocop and Blade runner. Each one of the four main titles are stories on its own. There are also comics and books in the Deus Ex series. Even though each title has its own storyline and distinct settings, they all explore the same conspiracy theories and methods that the world’s elite use to manipulate and control society.

Deus Ex (2000)

Anti-terrorist agent, JC Denton who is an employee of the United Nations Anti-Terrorist Coalition is on a mission to stop and prevent wars but discovers deep-seated conspiracies. The storyline has fictional organizations like Hong Kong Triads, the Illuminate and Majestic 12 which he encounters. The game is developed to play off in 2052.

Deus Ex: Invisible War

In 2003 the sequel to Deus Ex was released for Xbox and Windows players. Invisible War plays off twenty years in the future. It follows strongly is the setting of Deus Ex as first-person shooter game.

Here the story follows Alex D. who is a trainee in the Tarsus Academy. He fights conspiracies in a world that is in the process of being rebuilt after it was destroyed during the Collapse. Invisible War allow the player to choose both gameplay and plot while continuously branching gameplay element and plot lines. 

Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Human Revolution is the third in the Deus Ex series of games which was released in 2011. Deus Ex: Human Revolution should actually be the first in the game timeline. Consider that the first game plays off in 2052, while Dues Ex: Invisible War plays off twenty years later in 2072, but Dues Ex; Human Revolution plays off in 2027.

The characters of this game include Adam Jensen who is the protagonist and a former Swat Commander for the Detroit Police. After his dismissal from Detroit Police, he became Sarif Industries’ security chief. With a list of excellent characters including the CEO of Sarif Industries, Adam’s girlfriend, Megan Reed both of whom play a big role in his life, after all, it was the CEO of Sarif, David Sarif who was responsible for the mechanical augmentation of Adam Jensen after he was critically injured. 

Deus Ex: The Fall (2014)

Deus Ex: The Fall was released for PC and mobile devices and the fourth of the series. It was the first of the Deus Ex games to be developed with mobile players in mind and one of the biggest. It plays off in 2027 which is a thriving time for global conspiracy and social divide.

It is also the golden era of human augmentation, technology and science. Here you follow the story of a British SAS soldier, Ben Saxon. He is desperate for the truth behind drug conspiracy after he underwent mechanical augmentation. 

Deus Ex Go

Deus Ex Go is another mobile version which follows Adam Jensen during his struggles. He partakes in combat, hacking and solving puzzles. In this game that is different than the rest of the series, players can create their own puzzles too and share it online. There are seven chapters within the Deus Ex Go game with 54 levels in total. 

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided was released in 2016 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Windows. Here Adam Jensen returns again as the protagonist. Since he was in Deus Ex: Human Revolution as an augmented security chief he gets a couple of new augmentations in this series too. It is now two years after Human Revolution and Jensen now works for a different company.

He works for Task Force 28 which is an Interpol funded organization. His allegiance is split between a hacker group called the Juggernaut Collective and Task Force 29. Since Jensen wants to bring down the Illuminate, he wants to collaborate with Juggernaut Collective who wants to bring down the Illuminate.

Adam Jensen

Adam Jensen is the main protagonist of Deus Ex: Human Revolution and returns again in Mankind Divided. In the first series he works for Sarif Industries under David Sarif, and the latter he works for Task Force 29 while collaborating with the Juggernaut Collective to bring down the Illuminate. He has a heavily augmented body. 

Yuen Kong

Yuen Kong was prior to the release of Deux Ex. He was the Hong Kong Red Arrow Triad leader. Maggie Chow killed him long before JC Denton visited Hong Kong, but she pinned the murder on the Luminous Path, nevertheless. Yuen Kong’s successor was Max Chen as Red Arrow Triad leader. 

David Sarif

David Sarif is the former boss of Adam Jensen and the owner of Sarif Industries. In later series his company has gone bankrupt and he is seen investing in other industries. Sarif Industries was a North American based biotechnology company and also the one to give Adam Jensen mechanical augmentation. 

Faridah Malik

Faridah Malik is an airplane pilot for the company that Adam Jensen works for, Sarif Industries. Shea plays in Human Revolution and well as in the novel Fallen Angel. She often helps Jensen and he also helps her to solve the murder of her friend. 

Frank Pritchard

Frank or Francis Pritchard also known as Nucl3arsnake is Sarif Industries’ cyber security head in Human Revolution. When he appears in Mankind Divided, he plays a freelance hacker. 

Gordon Quick

Gordon Quick guards the Luminous Path’s compound entrance and the Dragon Head of the Luminous Path Triads. 

Gunther Hermann

Gunther Herman also works for UNATCO as a mechanically augmented agent. He loves using deadly force and uses combat knives, flamethrowers, plasma, and assault rifles. 

Alex D

Alex Denton is the third sibling and protagonist in Invisible War. He is the clone of JC Denton which also makes him by extension the brother or clone of Paul Denton. When you start playing you can choose what you want Alex D to be, either male or female. 

Anna Navarre

Anna Navarre was first an ally to JC Denton but turns enemy later. She is a mechanically augmented agent in Deus Ex and works for Majestic 12 and UNATCO. 

JC Denton

JC Denton is his brother Paul Denton’s clone and a Nano-augmented protagonist in Deus Ex. In invisible war, he is another major character. JC has a main aim and that is stopping terrorism and works for the UNATCO. He also plays a role in causing the Collapse.

The Unique Look of Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Human Revolution reflects a Renaissance theme and you will notice that even characters that have human augmentation dress in late medieval Italian style. Homes are also decorated in a similar fashion.

Looking at the game, you will notice a sepia-tinted color palette which strongly ties with the historic manuscripts. While large parts of Human Revolution take place during daylight hours, the locations are still dark and brooding.
