1894-95 2¢ Washington Triangles – Type I, II, III


The Bureau of Engraving and Printing, a division of the Treasury Department, began printing U.S. postage stamps in 1894, modifying the 1890 American Bank Note Company designs by adding triangles to the upper corners. The triangles on the 2 cent George Washington stamp denomination exist in three versions.

Postage Stamp Identifier for the 2¢ Triangle Types
Type I – Horizontal lines of uniform thickness run across the triangle. Type II – Horizontal lines cross the triangle, but they are thinner inside triangle than outside.

Type III – Horizontal lines do not cross the double frame lines of the triangle.
